Hillary Clinton to undergo surgery on right elbow

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will have to undergo surgery to repair her right elbow, that she broke on Wednesday evening while heading to the White House, the State Department said.

The surgery is scheduled for sometime next week. She canceled her public appointments for today.

President Barack Obama was one of the first well-wishers to call her late last night.

Clinton rejects Israeli settlement expansion claims

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton rejected yesterday Israeli claims that the Bush administration had secretly approved Jewish settlement expansion on the West Bank.

"We have the negotiating record, that is the official record, that was turned over to the Obama administration by the outgoing Bush administration," Clinton told reporters in Washington. "There is no memorialization of any informal and oral agreements."

President Barack Obama has stood firm in his call for Israel to stop expanding settlements, including that caused by population growth, stating that it violates commitments made by Israel in the 2003 "road map" peace plan.

Clinton said any agreements reached with Israel during the Bush administration did not become part of official U.S. policy. "And there are contrary documents that suggest that they were not to be viewed as in any way contradicting the obligations that Israel undertook pursuant to the road map. And those obligations are very clear."

Clinton ends jaunt in China

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was interviewed on Chinese TV and called on China to continue financing U.S. debt to prevent further sliding of the world economy.

China has the world's largest foreign reserve account at around US $1.7 trillion.

Clinton attended a service at the Haidian Christian Church in Beijing on Sunday, and met with a group of a group of 22 women's-rights advocates. China is the last stop on Clinton's Asia tour, her first foreign jaunt as secretary of state.

Barack Obama to nominate Hillary Clinton on Monday

Democratic officials said that Barack Obama will announce his new security team including Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

Obama is also expected to announce that he is keeping Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, a move that is angering his more progressive supporters. He will reportedly appoint General James L. Jones, a retired Marine commandant and NATO supreme commander, as his national security adviser; with Eric H. Holder Jr. a former deputy attorney general, as his choice for attorney general and Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona as secretary of homeland security, the sources said.

Susan E. Rice, a campaign adviser and former assistant secretary of state , will be nominated as ambassador to the United Nations, a position that will be elevated to cabinet level.

Clinton to be named Secretary of State after Thanksgiving

According to an anonymous Obama transition aide, the president-elect will nominate Sen. Hillary Clinton for secretary of state after the Nov. 27 Thanksgiving holiday.

Such leaks from the Obama team were rare during the campaign process, but are now common with the transition probably as a means of airing out possible Obama choices.

Should Clinton accept, which seems likely for a number of reasons including husband Bill's willingness to be vetted, she would become the third woman to hold the post. Madeline Albright, who served under Bill Clinton, and current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, are the first two women to serve as secretaries of state.

Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State?

Looks like Sen. Hillary Clinton will be strongly considered for the position of secretary of state based on unusual leaks from the Obama transition team, and a meeting between Clinton and President-elect Barack Obama.

Should Clinton accept it might indicate that she is keeping open the possibility of running for president again in 2016 when she will be 67 years old. In comparison, Sen. John McCain would have been 72 if had won the election.

By becoming secretary of state, Clinton could rack up some executive branch experience and would be better positioned to compete for an Obama endorsement and for his social networking support.
