Obama comments on Middle East summit

Sen. Barack Obama released a statement on today's Middle East summit on the situation between Israel and Palestine:

“Today's summit in Sharm el-Sheikh is encouraging. I support the efforts of Prime Minister Olmert, President Mubarak, and King Abdullah to strengthen President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad – two Palestinian leaders who have demonstrated their commitment to non-violence and achieving peace with Israel. These leaders seek peace and deserve the support of the international community.”

“I applaud Prime Minister Olmert's announcements that Israel will release Palestinian prisoners as a gesture of goodwill. We hope that this goodwill, along with the unfrozen tax revenues being sent from Israel to the Palestinian Authority, will help strengthen a Palestinian partner for peace with Israel.”

Inspired by Barack Obama

Many people have responded to Team Obama's donation drive asking supporters to tell what inspired them to support Barack Obama.

A few videos and quotes are included below:

Amy, from Hilliard, Florida writes:

My children are my inspiration. I know that may seem common to say that, but it is true. I see in the five of them the future, and it is so important to me that I do what I can for them. I want them to have an America worth fighting for, and worthy of them. I want them to have a home, and a safe place to live and raise their own children.

…My decisions in the political arena are based them. When I support a candidate it is because I believe that person will help this country to a better place. That is why I am supporting you Senator Obama. I believe you want a better future for your own children just as I do.

Daren, from Smithfield, Utah writes:

There is tremendous human suffering that exists because health care is not accessible to persons with disabilities. I believe Barack will take action to relieve this suffering and ensure that all Americans can afford to receive the services they need. I support Barack because I truly believe he will support the people of this country.

2Q fundraising enters home stretch

Barack Obama sent a fundraising letter today in the last week of the 2nd quarter that ends in June.

Obama will try to show that he is indeed "sustainable" in terms of fundraising, a question some raised after his spectacular first quarter returns.

Here is the copy of Obama's appeal:

Dear Friend,

and share your
story of inspiration

Donate and Inspire

Candidates typically spend a week like this -- right before the critical June 30th financial reporting deadline -- on the phone day and night, begging Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs to write huge checks.

Not me. Our campaign has rejected the money-for-influence game and refused to accept funds from registered federal lobbyists and political action committees.

But there are serious financial consequences to that decision.

Cutting off the flow of easy Washington money means we have to work harder. Instead of relying on a handful of powerful interests, we must bring together hundreds of thousands of supporters, each owning an individual piece of our movement.

It's one thing to talk about financing campaigns differently. It's another for us to take that risk and put our trust in one another.

The June 30th deadline will prove that this era of broken politics and widespread cynicism is coming to a close. We're ready for that change, and together we can turn the page.

The rest of the country, and the world, is watching. They want to see if we can shake up the politics of the past and set the tone for this election and the future of our democracy.

You have shown your support before, and now you can share your inspiration.

Make a donation of $50 and be a part of something big:

But don't stop there.

If we're going to get hundreds of thousands of people to join our movement, we need to do something different. That's why I'm turning the rest of this fundraising drive over to you.

This is the last you will hear from me until after the June 30th deadline.

From here on out, your stories and your passion will determine our success. When you make a donation, I want you to share what inspired you to join our movement. For the rest of the week, those stories -- including your story -- will drive the results.

Something powerful and personal inspired you to join our movement. It may be your family's rising health care costs or a relative fighting in Iraq. You might be fed up with corruption in Washington or frustrated by how petty and divisive our national politics has become.

Whatever your reasons, they will connect with someone else and they will make a difference. Make your donation now and share what inspired you to support our movement for change:

Pundits and Washington insiders use these fundraising deadlines to measure the viability of campaigns. They like to judge potential in dollars, as if money alone somehow indicates widespread support.

But we measure success in people -- the number of supporters giving to the campaign, and the number of donations they make to show their commitment.

We can get at least 10,000 people involved this week, but only if you take control.

Each of us must reach out to the people we know -- our friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors -- and inspire them to join our movement for change.

Donate now. Share your story and spread the word:

barackobama.com/inspire

Watch our website and your inbox for real stories from supporters like you.

This fundraising deadline is an important challenge for our campaign, but I know I can put my trust in you.

I have faith that we will succeed, and it won't be because of me -- it will be because each of you has the power to inspire.

Thank you.

Barack

Barack Obama

P.S. -- We've built something together that's bigger than me or my candidacy. I just made my own donation to this movement and wrote a short note about how you've inspired me:

I've seen what can happen when people who love their country come together and decide it's time for change. As a community organizer in the South Side of Chicago, I was part of a movement that turned around neighborhoods that others had given up on. I know what's possible for this country. I know we can build a new kind of politics that recognizes we're all connected as one people, that we rise or fall as one nation, and that we're ready to turn the page and start anew.

Obama campaign to launch Iowa TV ads

Barack Obama's presidential campaign will launch its first television ad campaign this week in Iowa in what may be an attempt to raise the candidate's name recognition.

Some polls have shown that about 25 percent of adults still are not familiar with Barack Obama. Early polling often reflects a candidate's name recognition.

Among other possibilities is that the campaign will test which messages "click" with Iowa voters.

Two television ads will be used for this initial limited campaign.

A 60-second commercial, called "Choices," features Harvard Professor Laurence Tribe praising the decision Obama made after graduating from Harvard Law School to become a community organizer rather than a corporate lawyer.

The other 30-second spot, titled "Carry," has Illinois State Sen. Kirk Dilliard, a Republican, speaking about Obama's work in the Illinois Legislature, where Dillard praises him for supporting ethics reform, expanding child care and health coverage and tax credits for low-income workers.

Running ads this early could be a waste of money and the move might be meant to placate supporters worried about Obama's poll numbers, which have stalled recently.

Barack of Ages

Sen. Barack Obama spoke before a crowd of about 10,000 United Church of Christ (UCC) members in

"Doing the Lord's work is a thread that's run through our politics since the very beginning," Obama told church members. "And it puts the lie to the notion that the separation of church and state in America--a principle we all must uphold and that I have embraced as a constitutional lawyer and most importantly as a Christian--means faith should have no role in public life."

Barack is a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago's South Side.

The UCC was first church to ordain an African-American, the first woman and the first openly gay pastor. It was also the first denomination to approve same-sex marriage.

FaceBook Application

There's an interesting application on Facebook at:

Link

It's a poll in which money is donated to candidates according to the percentage of votes they get in the poll.

I'm not entirely sure where the money comes from but I'm guessing it comes from ads generated on Facebook.

Barack Obama is clearly in the lead among Democrats. You must registered on Facebook to participate, and it costs the user nothing to raise money for the Obama campaign.

Barack Obama and a "Better Way"

At a rally in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, Ben Harper announced that his song -- "Better Way" would be used as a campaign song by the Obama campaign.

Here are the lyrics for Better Way and below a video of Ben Harper performing the song.

Better Way
I'm a living sunset
Lightning in my bones
Push me to the edge
But my will is stone

'Cause I believe in a better way

Fools will be fools
And wise will be wise
But I will look this world
Straight in the eyes

I believe in a better way
I believe in a better way

What good is a man
Who won't take a stand
What good is a cynic
With no better plan

I believe in a better way
I believe in a better way

Reality is sharp
It cuts at me like a knife
Everyone I know
Is in the fight of their life

And I believe in a better way

Take your face out of your hands
And clear your eyes
You have a right to your dream
And don't be denied

I believe in a better way
I believe in a better way
I believe in a better way
