Howard Dean considred for surgeon general

CNN is reporting that Dr. Howard Dean is under consideration to replace Dr. Sanjay Gupta as President Barack Obama's nominee for surgeon general.

Gupta withdrew Thursday saying he wants to focus more on his family and career as a surgeon.

Dean, a former presidential candidate, ended a four-year term as head of the Democratic Party this year. His accomplishments include helping the Democrats recapture both Congress and the White House.

The surgeon general head U.S. Public Health Service and is the top federal government spokesperson on matters of public health.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Howard Dean, a practicing physician before entering politics, was under consideration by the Obama administration for the post of US surgeon general, CNN reported Friday.

Sources say that President-elect Barack Obama has offered the job of Surgeon General to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, of CNN and CBS fame. If this pans out, it would be one of my favorite of Obama's nominations yet.

I've been a fan of Dr. Gupta for years mostly watching him on CNN were he appears as a capable journalist in addition to his profession as a neurosurgeon.

Gupta is now in the vetting process and has reportedly considered the financial impact of giving up his high-paying media jobs, but it is expected that he will accept the position in a few days. The sources said that Gupta had made his desire for the position known to the Obama transition team. Obama met with Gupta for two hours in November and also with Health and Human Services secretary Tom Daschle.

He is not a stranger to Washington having served as a Whitehouse fellow in the 1990s. Gupta is of Indian and Pakistani heritage.
