Michelle Obama will be joined by students from Bancroft Elementary in Washington who will help plant and maintain the 1,100 sq. foot garden.
The fully-organic garden will include 55 kinds of vegetables; a variety of berries, herbs and two beehives for honey. White House chefs will use the produce for the first family and for other official events.
The Obama garden will be the first since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a victory garden that helped inspire millions of Americans to take up home gardening.

I live in Elwood, Illinois and we have a place here in our town called the "Children's Garden Project." It, too, is planted & maintained by children from the Elwood Community School. (Of course with the help of the Children's Garden project committee.) It has grown into a wonderful place to spend time during the summer. It has a "pizza garden," an ABC flower garden, a "yellow brick road" as well as area's for children to play in. When it is time to harvest the various vegetables, the children come to take home & enjoy the "fruits" of their labors. It is a beautiful & greatly enjoyed part of Elwood, Illinois
