Obama lifting stem cell research ban

President Barack Obama is reversing George W. Bush's ban on stem cell research but leaving it to Congress to decide on whether the legislative ban on federal financing for human embryo experiments should also be overturned.

The ban, known as the Dickey-Wicker amendment, was legislated in 1996, and has been renewed yearly since then.

Religious groups have opposed the research likening it to abortion since it uses discarded human embryos. Supporters say that the ban has hindered scientific research that could help treat many diseases and injuries.
