Rep. George Miller: Why I support Senator Obama

Why I support Senator Obama

by Representative George Miller, Friday, January 18, 2008 at 03:32 PM

Rep. George Miller (D-CA) has represented the 7th District of California in the East Bay of San Francisco since 1975 and serves as chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee.

I have served in the Congress a long time and I have seen a lot of different people throw their hats into the presidential ring. I am really excited by what I see in Senator Barack Obama and I am proud to support him for president. The energy and enthusiasm he brings to the democratic process is exciting. But more than that -- it is necessary to strengthen our country and move us beyond the very harmful and deeply cynical politics of George W. Bush.

Our country desperately needs to move in a new direction and I feel strongly that Barack Obama has the experience, the courage, and the passion to lead us there. Obama is the candidate who is most committed to making positive change for Americans today and the generations ahead. Californians concerned with health care and education, with ending the war, and with restoring our justice system have every reason to support Barack Obama. Californians who care about unifying our great nation have every reason to support Barack Obama. And Californians who want to continue to bring young people into our political process have every reason to support Barack Obama.

Obama is bringing the country together, tackling the issues that matter most to working people, women, youth, and to the future of the planet. He is bold and he has vision. He is ready to lead and ready to govern. The question for the rest of us is whether we are ready to do the work that is necessary to get Barack Obama elected president. I am ready. And I believe Californians are ready. I share his hope and his burning desire for change.
