Barack Obama started out helping the poor

When Barack Obama revealed his plan to address urban poverty yesterday, he was touching a subject close to his heart.

After graduating from Columbia University, Obama left a corporate job to work as a community organizer in the tough South Side of Chicago. He worked in neighborhoods hit by plant closures.

Three years later, Obama left for Harvard University to get his law degree. He went with the express purpose of eventually getting involved in politics. Obama wanted to make change and he had come to the conclusion that it was necessary to break into the world of electoral politics to accomplish his goals.

When he graduated from Harvard with magna cum laude honors, Obama was offered lucrative corporate positions but turned them down. He did not forget his commitment to make a difference, which included making a difference in poor urban neighborhoods.

After winning a seat on the Illinois State Senate, Obama worked on passing a new earned income tax credit and on health-care reform.

Obama made the war against urban poverty a focal point both of his U.S. Senate and presidential campaigns. For info on his current positions, visit the following page:
