Barack Obama names high profile Nevada team

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama announced his Nevada campaign prior to his fourth visit to Las Vegas.

The committee consists of state Sen. Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas; Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie, D-Reno, businesswoman Rose McKinney-James; Democratic stalwart Billy Vassiliadis; and education activist Elaine Wynn, wife of casino magnate Steve Wynn.

"I am proud to have the support of this group of respected leaders and looking forward to working with them as we build a strong team of Nevadans committed to changing our politics so that we can meet the challenges facing our country," Obama said in a released statement.

Horsford runs Nevada Partners, the firm that runs the training academy for the Culinary Workers Union. This is an important connection because the culinary workers may be one of the most coveted local unions in the early states.

Vassiliadis, CEO of R&R Partners, is a premier Nevada political consultant.

Elaine Wynn is sometimes called the "First Lady of Las Vegas." Her husband is credited with leading Las Vegas' revival in the 1990s and is associated with hotels like the Golden Nugget, Mirage and Bellagio.
