Some blogs today have attacked candidate Barack Obama's contentions this morning on an MSNBC interview where he contrasted his views on the war with Hillary Clinton's.

The most common criticism is that Barack and Hillary have similar voting records on the Iraq War in the U.S. Senate.

What makes this criticism unfair is that firstly it has been much more popular to have an anti-war stance in the last few years.

When Obama came out against the war in 2002, the Democratic leadership was nearly lockstep in favor of the war. I can remember people saying it would be political suicide except for those in the "safest" districts to voice opposition, especially those looking for higher office.

Obama though said back then that once in the fighting it would be very difficult to get out. He has always supported giving troops what they need to accomplish their job as safely as possible.

So the fact that he has voted for funding in not inconsistent with what he has been saying all along.
