Sonia Sotomayor confirmed as Supreme Court Justice

Judge Sonia Sotomayor is set to become the nation's first person of Hispanic descent to sit as a Supreme Court justice when she takes the oath on Aug. 8, 2009.

Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's first pick for the nation's highest court, will be only the third woman to serve as a Supreme Court justice.

The "Wise Latina" was confirmed today by the Senate in a 68-31 vote. Nine of the Senate's 40 Republicans voted for Sotomayor.
