Obamas celebrate Cinco de Mayo a day early

The Obamas celebrated Cinco de Mayo a day early at the White House on Monday.

Cinco de Mayo, or "the Fifth of May," celebrates the victory of the Mexican army over French forces on May 5, 1862 and is widely celebrated by Mexican Americans. The holiday, in fact, is more important among Mexicans in the United States than in Mexico itself, and has come to be celebrated by many people of non-Mexican background.

I believe that this world needs more deeds and fewer words. In 1964 in Milan I saw my father save the lives of two children, at great risk to his own life. The instant before he acted was not filled with doubt or reasoning, but was focused on the end: save the children. If he had not acted in that moment, the lives of those two children would have been lost. The difference is in the act.

The Dalai Lama, on the occasion of his visit to Rome in December of 2007, uttered strong words that unfortunately were not widely heeded: “Deeds,” he said, “in this world there are too many words and not enough deeds.” The power of ideas is manifested in acts; without these there is nothing to hold on to.

You possess a magnetic force, and it is that which we need to give vitality and energy to new projects; to be free to breathe life into the hope for a better future.

The work that I am sending you represents that which many say, but no one translates into action: three fundamental principles for a better future, so that all may have life through the efforts of everyone. It embodies these messages in a positive way:

Writing, even in water, does not disappear;
The dove, as a symbol of peace, although it has a light frame, is greater than ever;
The sun is more alive, because the environment is cleaner.

The power of ideas to improve this world is rising, and you are surely its greatest proponent.

My contribution is minimal, but heartfelt, and it has been made possible by various people who, like me, share my dream.
Best Regards

Dear Sirs/Mesdames,

I wish to clarify that the work entitled NO VIOLENCE by Eugenio Costa left Italy addressed to me, Alisa Facchini, inside a tube specifically formed and decorated for it. It should have been mounted on a frame before being sent to President Obama. Due to personal problems I undervalued the importance of the work. I felt unable to complete my task, and I arranged for the canvas to be shipped in the same manner in which it was sent to me.

I was concerned that there was no way to be sure that the mounted canvas would arrive at the White House, and that President Obama might not receive the work NO VIOLENCE by Eugenio Costa, and I had it transported directly to the White House without being mounted, and without informing Mr. Costa. Not having further notice of the package, Mr. Costa sought through various channels, your office being one of them, to locate the canvas.

After a trace conducted with the help of FedEx agents, I learned that the canvas was retrieved by an agent of the White House, and is likely undergoing the usual security controls.

I would like to emphasize that my actions were not intended to prevent the work NO VIOLENCE from reaching President Obama or to present the artist Eugenio Costa in a bad light, but to ease my fears that the canvas would eventually be abandoned in a warehouse.

Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Thank you for your understanding,

Alisa Facchini
