Barack Obama forced to defend Treasury pick

The US Senate delayed confirmation hearings for President-elect Barack Obama's choice for Treasury Secretary after it was disclosed he failed to pay self-employment taxes.

Timothy Geithner failed to pay taxes for wages earned while working for the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2004. Obama said that the mistake was embarrassing but is one that is commonly made for people working for international institutions.

Geithner is a strong advocate of rapid bailout action for Wall St.
