Arne Duncan picked as education secretary

Democratic sources say that President-elect Barack Obama has chosen Arne Duncan to serve as education secretary. Duncan currently runs the Chicago school district.

Duncan has been credited with improving performance in Chicago's troubled school system and is known for some controversial techniques including paying students for good grades.

According to the Washington Post, Duncan "graduated from Harvard University, where he was co-captain of the basketball team, and he played professional basketball in Australia from 1987 to 1991. He returned to Chicago to direct the Ariel Education Initiative, which creates educational opportunities for youths on the South Side.”

Obama made it clear during his campaign that he was determined to reform failing schools in America's urban areas and Duncan has the resume for this kind of task.
