Barack Obama is the first president from the 'Star Trek generation' and possibly the first one to admit to collecting comic books as a youngster.
In an interview with Entertainmen Weekly, President-elect Obama said: “I was always into the Spider-Man/Batman model. The guys who have too many powers, like Superman, that always made me think they weren’t really earning their superhero status. It’s a little too easy. Whereas Spider-Man and Batman, they have some inner turmoil. They get knocked around a little bit.”
And during a celebrity roast in New York City this year, Obama quipped while lampooning Sen. John McCain. “Contrary to the rumors you’ve heard, I was not born in a manger. I was actually born on Krypton and sent here by my father Jor-El to save the planet Earth.”
He has also mentioned on the campaign trail that he watched Star Trek as a kid. "I grew up on Star Trek. I believe in the final frontier," he said.
According to Leonard Nimoy, who played Lt. Commander Spock on the sci-fi series, when he first met Obama the then-candidate greeted him with the Vulcan hand salute.
Comics and movies have always been popular during tough economic times, so it will be interesting to see how Obama responds to the current crisis. Will he be able to "save the day?"

Obama has *already* responded to the economic crisis, Paul. He fell over himself to give criminal bankers authority to print themselves billions and hand it to each other and generally do whatever they want without any oversight or input from the American public--except we get to pick up the tab while we lose our homes.
Obama has stated loudly and clearly that he is a tool and servant for the monetary powers that run our country. And in other areas, such as the war he voted to fund, the government spying and "thoughtcrime" laws he voted for, who funded him, the controlled media's love affair with him, and who he's surrounding himself with, he has already demonstrated beyond doubt that his change amounts to a face-lift for the fascist policies of both Bush and Clinton.
It's really stunning how people are blinded by inane publicity and the selling of personality over policy.
