Former SC chief justice, Durham mayor endorse Obama

South Carolina's former Supreme Court chief justice and the mayor of Durham, North Carolina have cast their lots with Barack Obama's candidacy.

Ernest Finney, South Carolina's first black state Supreme Court chief justice since Reconstruction, told The Associated Press that the Illinois senator's views on education helped him make up his mind.

Durham Mayor Bill Bell gave Obama his endorsement on Thursday.

"Obama brings a different dimension to the campaign and the country in terms of his vision, the energy he has and his ideas," Bell said in an interview with The Associated Press. "He was out front in opposing the Iraq War and I think that conflict probably the biggest damage that this country has experienced."
