Obama retakes oath

Out of an "abundance of caution," President Barack Obama decided to retake the oath of office after a bungle that occurred during the inauguration. Two other presidents -- Calvin Coolidge and Chester A. Arthur -- have retaken the oath because of unusual circumstances the first time around.

President's Most Important Duty

Hillary Clinton often says that the president's most important duty is to protect the people of the United States citing the presidential oath of office.

I'm not going to argue that she is wrong on the most important presidential duty, but the oath of office does not even mention protecting the American people.

The oath of office is found in Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Notice that the oath mentions preserving, protecting and defending the "Constitution of the United States."

Yes, that includes things like habeus corpus and the Bill of Rights.
